Stranded in Ohrid en route to the remote Spomenik (World War II monuments and memorials in Yugoslavia), a poet reluctantly joined a boat ride to pass the time. Onboard, she overheard a conversation between an Albanian man and a Tajik family. In the absence of overt political discourse, their talk drifted toward youth, the subtle violences of tourism, and the question of who is allowed to speak — and who is only allowed to watch.
