Bootleg refers to a product made illegally, in a short term, the fake. However, some brands in deliberation copies the bootleg. In 1980s, a large number of bootleg t-shirts are produced and sold all over downtown New York City, with patterns designed by the sellers. Now Gucci copies this design and two more ’0’s appear in the price tag. Bootleg t-shirts are recognized as more authentic than ‘the official fake’, because ‘it’s better representing the hip-hop culture and the revolutionary spirit’. Here the artist challenges the boundary between authenticity and bootleg by a juxtaposition of self-produced products and readymade.
